Want to download any software? Where will you go? Probably, you would google the name of the software and go to the first site returned by Google. But, you can actually bookmark some sites and search directly in that site for the softwares you wish to have. So, in this post I am sharing some Websites where you can find and download the softwares you wish. Websites mentioned below provide standalone installers rather than online installers.
Softpedia
I always use Softpedia while I am in need of any software. As in their description, It's worth saying Softpedia will be updated every minute. You could find the latest version of any software you want to download. From Linux .iso files to small games you can find it all. In the download page of every software, Softpedia's editorial team would have written a long review about that software with needed screenshots. Details of that application will be provided in the download page (Size of the sofware & whether it is freeware or not). If it's not a freeware price of that software will also be given.
You can also perform a platform wise search. They have separate subdomain for each sections. Windows, Mac, Mobile, Linux are such an example of those sections. If you have any problem with downloading a software you could try a different mirror site. You can keep track of the latest version of the software you like. Simply, press follow link at the download page of any sofware you like. An email will be sent to you when the newversion of the software comes alive in the web.
Linux users could find software packages for their favourite distributions in the linux section. Presently, tar.bz2 archive and deb and rpm packages are available for all linux softwares.
Techspot
It is akin to Softpedia. But in Techspot you need not browse in a seperate platform section to find your favourite software for other OS. At the download page of every software, separate links will be provided for every supported platforms. You can read the features of the particular software at download page. All features are given in bullet points which make it easier to gather informations about any software. Similar softwares will also be shown if you select similar tab. If there exist a portable version of any particular software, you can download it using the portable link.
You can browse their categories to know about the latest trending software of any particular genre.
Filehippo

This was taken from Filehippo site's about page. They care about the quality of software not about quantity. If you find the software you wish in Filehippo's directory, no doubt it must be useful and good.They have very fast servers. So, your download will be fast. Softwares downloaded from their site are 100% free from spyware and virus. They keep the older versions of the softwares they have so, you can download them if the latest version you download doesn't support your machine. They also have categories you can browse those to find new applications which would be useful to you.
Sourceforge
Sourceforge is a library of opensource project where you can find freewares licensed under GPL. Opensource lovers can opt for the softwares in this site. With over 430,000 projects sourceforge is nurtured by Slashdot Media. You can subscribe for the softwares you like, you will be notified through an email when a new version is released.
download.cnet
Popularly known as download.com they host over 150,000 softwares. It was my favourite download directory some years ago. At least, you can use this site to find the most popular softwares in the world as it is the most popular software directory.
